Beach on the French Riviera is the first beach in France to ban smoking - Monday 1 August 2011
La Plage Lumiere in La Ciotat is the first beach in France to become a non-smoking beach. This fresh approach is bound to pave the way for other beaches on the Cote d’Azur to ban smoking. Beachgoers are reminded to stub out when they enter the beach club by a large non-smoking sign, and ashtrays have been provided outside the entrance.
The move to ban cigarettes from the pretty Provencal beach has been met with a mostly positive reaction. It has increased the beach’s popularity with families of holiday makers in the South of France, who are pleased that their children can play in the sand without the risk of unearthing cigarette butts. A 35 euro fine will be in place for anyone who breaks the non-smoking rule on the beach.
