French Riviera Beaches hone in on smoking bans - Monday 4 June 2012
La Plage du Fossan, Menton has followed other beaches in the French Riviera by introducing a beach smoking ban starting from the 1st of July until the 31st of August. The decision was taken with an agreement between Menton City Council and an anti-cancer association. (Ligue Nationale contre du cancer)
La Plage Lumiere in La Ciotat was the first beach to implement the law and it was thought that it would be the first beach of many. La Plage du Fossan has introduced the rule for similar reasons as the pioneer; primarily to make the beach a family environment. Secondly, the beach smoking ban was for ecological reasons; to avoid the ugliness of cigarette butts on the stones which can be dangerous for children.
Beachgoers must stub out their cigarettes in the ashtrays upon arrival at the beach. However, the law is only in operation from 9am-8pm therefore butts may still appear. The local Police will also enforce the law to prevent anybody who breeches it.
It is expected that many other French Riviera beaches will follow suit sooner rather than later. Go to the easybeachbooking website to ensure having a clean and hygenic beach, not only in Menton but all along the French Riviera as far as Menton up to Nice, Cannes, Fréjus, Théoule sur Mer and St Tropez.
